Games this weekend?

Post  Trevor Y. on Wed Aug 17, 2011 10:39 pm

Okay my post for anyone free for games this week was an obvious tank... Shocked

Anyone for a non-league game, 'for fun' to help ease me back into Warhammer and 8th Edition sometime in the weekend? The good news is you will probably destroy me, because I haven't played for 3-4 years, and I heard Wood Elves really didn't fare well with the new 8th edition steadfast rules... <- easy win! cheers

You know what? I just happen to be available tonight as well. Also, don't sell the elves short, I've had a winning record with them in every league since 8th edition came out. Don't believe what the internet people tell you!

Excellent guys! I am available all day and evening. I can be there for 7pm and/or earlier if Nathan want s ago at me as well!

The more practice the better!

What point value do you guys play?

Back in 7th edition, I used to win 80%-85% of my games, so I am glad to hear they did not totally get nerfed by 8th. However it might be rough, because I played a heavy skirmish build, and relied on a little fear, and with steadfast I heard dryads are not as effective as they used to be...

I can be there around 5:45-ish. We normally play 2500 points but if you want to go less I can do that too, it just take a bit of time to figure out a list.

ooooooooh boooooy!!!

Barely squeaked a 2500 point LEGAL army list. I am sporting a lot of characters points because I ran out of troops!!! I definitely am going to have to paint up that box of 16 Glade Guard I have, 23 Eternal Guard includding FC, my mounted Lord, the Wild Riders and finish up the warhawk riders to get a better list going before I start painting my new TKs!!! farao

When I played last the league and most people were running 2000 point armies.

But I am good to go for tonight with a 2500 point list.

When 8th edition came out we decided to bump up the points to make room for some more interesting builds. I'm off work at 5 so hopefully I can make it home to pick up my stuff and then to the den by 5:45 but if I'm a bit late feel free to set up a table with terrain.

Is there anyone else that is free for a second game tonight?

Well Nathan you mowed me over like a freight train, but at least I got a couple of good swipes in there. Very Happy

I definitely do not have a competitive 2500 point list with what I have for models at this time, and would need more heavy hitters at that point level if what you brought to the table is any indication as to what others are bringing... Sadly, I don't think I want to buy more Wood Elves to make them more competitive at 2500 points. I don't like them enough to spend more money on them. Sad Though I may pick up maybe another 6 Tree Kin... With 9 Tree Kin, I was able to build a better list... I could paint all of those in a matter of an evening...

I think I will be ensuring my next army of Tomb Kings will have the right mixture of troops to be competitive at 2500.

I learned a lot this game. I see how magic works under the new rules and how important having a higher level spellcaster is. Your one level 5 was way better than my two level 2's. One level 4 on my side would have been better! I also should have been more aggressive with my scout placement, putting them 13" away from your fliers on their flank, and hitting them with Killing Blow attacks on the first round at short range, taking them out right away. That would have forced you to turn your knights, or eat more in their backs, and I could have run into the forest, and possibly counter charged you with my treekin and dryads. To be honest, I was surprised when you told me I was going first. For some reason I thought for some reason you were going first. Maybe it was because you won the initial dice roll to choose table edge... So unfortunately that influenced how I put my troops down on the field, to my detriment.

Bad mistakes on my part due to not playing for a long time and forgetting all my tactics with this army... I am starting to remember that I used to play more aggressive, zipping around and moving forests, forcing people to go through them because they were always in their way, baiting charges with my small units of skirmishers, and casting spells on the armies once they were forced to go into the forest. I used to keep my spellsingers/weavers solo, so I could easily move around and always get into range for my spells. I think the Line of Sight rules changed though, because I think I remember you couldn't look through terrain, only into it prior to 8th...

There are definitely things I could have done better that game. I still do not think I had the armor piercing power to take down the units unfortunately... Sad Short of having more treekin, another treeman, or an equivalent army of Wild Riders... Something with STR 5 or better to reduce the armor save.

Anyways it was definitely fun, and look forward to playing again. I really missed playing this game! I can't wait to get my Tomb Kings!

I did some thinking and I came to the following conclusions: most of what lost the game for you was a lack of experience in 8th edition and not knowing what the Bretonnian army can do.

- If you hope to get off any magic (or stop it for that matter) a lord-level wizard is important, especially with Wood Elves who can take the wand of the witch elm which allows you to re-roll any failed dispel attempts.

- You charged some of your best and most dangerous combat units into my giant peasant unit who were stubborn and leadership 9 with a re-roll from my battle standard nearby. You were almost guaranteed to win the combat but that unit is my tarpit and it normally holds up whatever it fights all game. You committed 2 units which cut your combat power in half and you didn't have the support to help them out. I could have left that combat alone and just held you up for the rest of the game. I think it would have been best to ignore that unit and go after my knights.

- You allowed me to charge, in one case with multiple units. The difference between me charging you and you charging me is huge. You charging my knights of the realm with your dryads would have meant you faced 10 S3 attacks instead of the 11 S6, 9 S5 and 16 S3 attacks that you got from my 2 units of knights. You had a couple opportunities to charge me but you hung back and let me come to you.

- You fought with your skirmishers outside of the forest. This is where 8th edition inexperience comes in. In 8th edition skirmishers are stubborn inside the forest. I probably should have told you that. If you had stayed in the forest not only would you have been stubborn but my cavalry would have taken dangerous terrain tests to charge you. I did have the damage spell from lore of life that does 2D6 S6 hits to a unit in a forest though so that was probably a detriment to you.

- Lastly you hung back too far with your shooting. The first turn only your glade riders were in range and I think in the second turn you still didn't have much to shoot at. Glade guard are most effective shooting at close range. At close range your glade guard could have decimated one of my knight units. If you deploy them forward they can shoot from turn 1 and they have room behind them to flee from charges if they need to. They can also move and shoot without penalty so you might as well use that to your advantage. Your waywatchers should have been deployed as scouts as well instead of keeping them behind your lines. They are more vulnerable but their killing blow shots are very scary, especially for my 5-knight unit of grail knights escorting my Level 4 wizard.

The game was enjoyable for sure though, hopefully it was for you too. I look forward to future games once you have a little more experience under your belt. Wink
