New Lizardmen Army

If you were starting a Lizardmen army from scratch, and were looking for a solidly playable Lizardmen army against most opponents, what would your army consist of?

Depends on what points your playing but in terms of general things that I find make a solid lizardman list, its a little bit of everything. I like to take only saurus as my core choice, though some people like skinks with kroxigor better. Personally I find that the units are a bit cumbersome despite their improved movement and they are doomed if you get flanked because the krox can only attack to the front (also I have really bad luck with kroxigor and it has left me not wanting to field them). Jungle swarms are no good and if you take skirmishers give them javelins or they will be hitting on rolls of 7 most of the time.

For special choices Chameleon skinks are a must, thats personal opinion, and terradons are pretty good too, though they both serve the same purpose i actually take units of both normally. Temple guard are a good unit, though a bit underwhelming compared to close combat specialists like swordmasters chosen or even chaos warriors, but their special rules when combined with a slann make them a nearly unbreakable combo, and a great point sink for your own slann to blow up repeatedly. The regular stegadon is a tough as nails chariot monster but the great bow is less that great and if you march you cant even fire it. Cold one cavalry are another unit I have bad luck with as they unsually go stupid at least twice normally 3 times a game for me, but personal feelings aside they are statistically a bad unit now, they don't have the armor to survive attacks or the initiative to deal out wounds before they die, they also only have spears unlike alot of heavy cavalry that carry lances.

That leads to rare choices. Razordons are great models with some bad rules and salamanders are some sub par models with great rules. I don't leave home without at least a couple of fire belching lizards in my army. The ancient stegadon is super tough and it's blowpipes can be deadly, but it is costly and tends to magnetize cannonballs and other warmachines to it.

For hero's scar vets are great fighters who can give even lord characters a reason to avoid them at a modest price and skink priests are decent enough casters that I sometimes use to hold an arcane item. Lore of heavens isn't too shabby but it definitely isn't one of the two that can really get lizards to dominate combats. The skink hero is a cheap character that can take some magic items and some cool mounts. I think a stegadon mount is too pricy and he is too squishy on a terradon, but again those are personaly opinions from times I've tried them.

In terms of Lord characters, none of the special characters are worth it, one of them even has an obsolete rule as his main power, and all but one of them is so expensive you need more than 2500 points to field them. That leaves the slann who is one of the best wizards in the game, even against special characters in other armies. He is also the best leadership in your army and the only lord able to be a bsb as well. Also he works wonders at removing your own temple guard from the battlefield. The old blood is a deadly fighter, but hardly more so than the scar vet, he can take more magic items but other than that he is +1WS and +1A and I think +1I from being a significantly cheaper model. I really only take him if I want to field a carnosaur mount.

Hope this has helped.

Yes this helped. Thanks! I did a lot more research today on the internet and I think I am going to do Tomb Kings first, and this will be my next army after I am done painting the Tomb Kings.
