Possibly in the evening on Saturday, I'll need to run it by the wife though.

Ha. You'll probably beat me anyways, so it won't matter.

I've won scraped some wins this league, but the more experienced players have been handing me my ass by huge margins.

Tomb Kings are very weak (especially the specific army I'm using), but I guess I'm a glutton for punishment.

Are they still a weak army? I would have thought they would be competitive with the new book. When I played against them at the last tournament they seemed decent.

It would have to be the evening, we're having a garage sale all day so I probably wouldn't be available until 6 at the earliest.

No marching ever makes them the slowest army in the entire game. It is impossible to play a tactical Tomb Kings game on your own terms. The enemy will dictate position and engagements as they wish. Having a magic spell that you are forced to rely on to simply move your army as much as every single other army in the game is a fool's game.

The army relies more on magic than any other army in the game. Magic to move their units. Magic to make their units not suck. Magic to desperately repair the massive casualties the sub-par units take. Magic is very unreliable. More than any other army, a bad magic phase can simply ruin your game. Roll a bad magic phase for another army and you get to blow up less of your enemies. Roll a bad magic phase for Tomb Kings and your army moves half as far as every single other army in the game, and fights half as hard. And then your Hierophant explodes and the army crumbles.

In the world of Steadfast, Unstable is the worst thing in the world. Even at 4 points per model a Skeleton isn't worth it. A unit of 40 Skeletons turns into a 2 turn speedbump, rather than a reliable tarpit. A unit of 40 Goblins loses combat by 10, it takes a Stubborn Ld test on the General's Ld with the BSB re-roll. A unit of 40 Skeletons loses combat by 10, and the unit is gone next turn guaranteed.

Units make a lot of attacks in 8th edition. A lot of attacks against a normal unit kill a lot of models. A lot of attacks against an Undead unit kill a double-lot of models. I don't think GW have appropriately priced the Tomb Kings units with this in mind.

On top of the general problems, there are a lot of specific problems:
Ushabti are totally useless at their current points cost;
Necrosphynxes likewise;
Tunneling units have to tunnel and can't charge the turn they show up; and
Characters can't be healed.

Now there are some good things in the book. The Casket of Souls is an auto-include in every single Tomb Kings army you'll face until the end of this edition. The Hierotitan is quite good. The War Sphynx is a capable unit.

Unfortunately those few units can't make up for the rest.

So then when you consider that the insane army I'm using is stacked full of Skeleton Archers and Ushabti, it poses an interesting challenge. A very weak build of a very weak army.

For some interesting comments from players better than I, check the following links:

Sleboda is a bit melodramatic, but he knows Tomb Kings inside and out.

I'm enjoying playing with the list. I enjoy hanging on by my fingernails each game, but I'm not playing the army book because it's powerful, and I'm not playing the army list I'm using because it's the best. Overall it is a significantly weaker army book than Orcs and Goblins.

I don't have any illusions whatsoever about the chances my incredibly weak infantry gunline has against an Empire army in the hands of an experienced player that's kicked my butt on a good day while I've been using a filthy army. Wink

But that doesn't mean I won't throw down the gauntlet.

That is too bad, I was thinking it might just be a similar case to what wood elf players were saying when 8th edition came out, along the lines of "OMFG WE are so underpowered in every way" and then after a month of playing under the new rules those complaints kinda went away as those same people figured out how to work with what they had.

I would but I work 11 to 7 that day. Also as a heads up to everyone this Saturday there is probably going to be a 40k Apocalypse game going on. I'm not sure how big but they generally take up 2+ tables.
