Random Mini's by Carson

Post  Carson on Sat Apr 16, 2011 10:29 pm

Thought I'd try my hand at a nice 40k mini. I spent easily 10hrs on this.....hope it was worth it. Destined for ebay! Very Happy

Couldn't imagine a bigger waste of 10 hours. I told you before not to drink and paint....it makes you paint 40k figs. Very Happy

Like the freehand on the glaive thingy. Nice stuff, how did you like painting something not destined for one of your armies?

It was fun actually. I just wish I could photo my mini's better.

Its nice, I like a lot of 40K stuff but I'm not sure I could bring myself to paint any.

It does look good. You're a natural 40K painter! Come to the dark side!

Hey Carson, nice looking mini ! We're getting more painted 40K mini's posted here then on the forum over there.. Smile

I'd love to see the scrolling work you did on his sword.

Its hard to get a good look at his armor though, with the photo.

I took a break from painting the dead and wipped up this bad boy for the wifes seaguard regiment. I have no idea what to do with the base though....snow?

Really like the earthy color scheme. These guys don't look right for snow.

What happened to the pic in the first post?

I think a bright green grass would look good with this color scheme, that or maybe a reddish rock using slate?

Focus your pictures man! It's like every picture of Nessie or bigfoot!

It's a nice looking mini well painted. As for the base I'd leave it or add a tuft of something if you feel so inclined.

What I really like about this mini is the fact that it's a break from what you were painting. I think that if everyone took the time to break up the big army projects everyone's always working on and did up a one off mini it would help with the dreaded army fatigue as well as actually being a good time to try to paint something and maybe spend a little extra time working on some things. Ideally a break mini would have nothing to do with another army but just something you can dive into and practice a new colour or whatever. Maybe work on a different skin tone. Something you might be curious about but doesn't have a place in any of your curent projects. Stuff like that.

Anyway well done Carson. Good to see. Except for the blurry action. FIX THAT SHIT!

I agree, it is always nice to break out of a rut with an unrelated mini. I usually pick something for one of my other armies but it is usually a character model that doesn't necessarily have to conform as much to the army theme. I actually have a few waiting in the wings for when I get tired of painting whatever I'm working on at the moment.

I just assumed he smeared Vaseline on the lens to hide the minor imperfections. That's what I do!

Actually, I like the blurry "Penthouse" effect. Considering doing it to all my armies now.

What I WAS going to say, and decided not to was to ask Scott if that's what he's been doing for the last couple years. Painting a couple (hundred) figs to overcome army fatigue?

I mentioned to Carson that a Wheat field grass would look perfect. Totally Brokeback Mountain - but it would go with the colours.

I needs a tri-pod......and some camera skills. I get army fatigue so these days I take breaks by painting up a few figs from other future projects.

The yellow on the armour is actually a golden color...agian good camera skills.

You don't necessarily need a tripod, what you need to do is put the camera on a stack of books or other suitably stable platform and use the timer feature on your camera. All digital cameras should have a 2-10 second timer. Use it because you move the camera slightly when you press the button to take the picture which results in blurry pictures. With the timer you can focus and frame your shot, press the button and then back away so the camera is completely motionless when the picture is actually taken.

When you do that, you can also use longer shutter speeds and other more advanced photography tricks that just don't work when taking pictures with the camera in your hand.
