I like it. I have the same model that I'm going to paint in my lizard colors with the GW option. I was thinking about painting it white to go with the fluff of being blessed by the Old ones, but after seeing yours I don't think I could do it. I'm no painter so I really can't comment on the paint job, I think it looks really good.

Skin was really easy:

Graveyard Earth Base
Kommando Khaki
Bleached Bone
mix of space wolf grey and skull white for final highlights.

You just water down the paints and then take just a tiny bit on the brush at a time for the highlights, almost like drybrushing but a little more controlled. You could probably actually get a similar result with drybrushing actually and you could probably start with the kommando khaki or even bleached bone as most of the base layers got pretty much covered up anyway. The main trick is to have very little paint on your brush and get thin coats rather than trying to get to the color you want in one shot.

The metals were even easier:

Boltgun metal base
red wash (Not sure of the name)
purple wash
devlan mud wash
Then I just rubbed it a bit with my fingers once it was all dry to get the edge highlights by rubbing off some of the wash colors.

Looks good. I really like how the shield turned out. Compliments can be weird, huh? Very Happy

Figured I try something new with some freehand. It turned out well I think, so well I sanded off the detail on the swordmaster banner and I'm planning to find a blank banner to replace the bsb. Let me know what you think.

I like the sketched look you went for. The idea to put those sketch marks in the background was a good idea. Attaboy!

Here are the test models for the other units. The bases aren't done but this is what I'm planning for dragon princes, archers and silverhelms.

Check it out, I made an eagle!

The tail is a bit funny, I think it would have looked better if I had cut up a second set of wings to fashion into a tail but I didn't want to go out and buy another griffon just for the wings. I'm pretty pleased with it anyway and I think it will look even better once I paint it up.

Cool nathan, I had the same idea for a eagle rider but never got past the "cutting " part.

This one took an evening of cutting and "sculpting" to make, I put sculpting in quotation marks because I haven't progressed much past the 3 year old with play dough level!

I'm surprised that I haven't seen more of these conversions out there, seemed like an obvious one to me.

How well does the griffon itself go together? I've heard poor things about the assembly of it. Nice work on the conversion!

It actually fits together quite well and doesn't actually need any glue. The joins are placed really well too so that they aren't too visible. I'm saving that one to paint for later.

Re: Nathan's Models

Post  nathanr on Mon Oct 17, 2011 2:11 pm

So I posted that eagle on Ulthain.net (the high elf forum) and I got a PM asking me if I wanted to make some on commission! Honestly I don't think the quality is at a level where I can sell them. Plus I have no idea what I should charge for something like that, it took me about 3 hours from start to finish but I think I could do it again in 2 hours or less.

Anyone have advice for me on this?

Do you wanna do it? If you'd really like to try your hand at it than charge 20$ plus the cost of the eagle and shipping. If you don't really wanna do it but would if you had to then charge 50$ plus S&H and Materials cost. Or tell him to fuck off and play Orc's.

If I get a commission request for a mini I really, really wanna paint I do it for peanuts. If I don't want to paint it then I charge double. If the guy has bad references I tell him to fuck off and play Heroclix.

I've made a few things on commission....only do it if its worth good coin, otherwise it just makes your hobby feel like work.

Nothing came of that commission request, I'm guessing my price was too steep.

In other news, I'm starting to realize that I'm not going to get my high elves done in time for the tournament. I've got my spear-elves finished and I'm almost done the silver helms but I still have archers, dragon princes, swordmasters, an eagle and characters left. Plus I need to base the entire army (if the dragon forge bases arrive in time). To realistically get done on time I'm going to have to lower my quality standards which I don't want to do. My real problem is that I only get 2-3 hours a night to paint and that doesn't give me enough time. I've actually looked at my schedule between now and the tournament and I only have 11 nights that I can paint. That means 22-33 hours to paint 50+ models.

I think I'll post in-progress shots to keep me motivated, starting tonight. I'll be finishing off my silverhelms and then starting on either the archers and/or the eagle.

This post is pretty meaningless, mostly just self-motivation and probably not interesting for anyone else but hopefully the progress pictures will be more interesting! Thanks for listening to me ramble and complain!

Spearmen

In-progress silver helms

One more painting session should finish off the silver helms I think.

Thanks, all the unit banners are going to have some sort of variation on that theme, the BSB is a little more elaborate but you'll have to wait and see!

Silver helms are done! If I have time I'll paint some shields for the unit but for now I'm going to move on to the next unit!

Archers next.
