The Razor Standard

Post  nathanr on Thu Aug 19, 2010 10:12 am

So this interesting discussion arose on Asrai.org (a wood elf forum) about the razor standard. On the GW website they did a tactics article on the contents of the new starter set and the high elf player put the razor standard on his unit of seaguard so that both close combat and ranged attacks would benefit from armour piercing. The rules guys at Asrai.org are saying that the bow shots shouldn't be affected and I think I agree with them. The razor standard states that the models in the unit gain the armour piercing special rule which if you look in the big red rulebook says that it affects close combat attacks only. It also says that ranged shots can be armour piercing if they are made with weapons with the armour piercing rule (handguns, etc.)

Anyone else have a different interpretation? I'm ok either way but I think we should decide now and make an official Saskatoon ruling anyway.

Here is the discussion on Asrai.org: http://www.asrai.org/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=18739

If it's true that it says in the BRB that armour piercing only affects close combat attacks, then how is this even a debate?

I think it is mostly because it was used on the GW website to give armour piercing to the sea guard's bow shots. There are also some people that just couldn't get it through their heads that ranged weapons work differently than close combat weapons.

The weapon used has to have the Armour Piercing rule for ranged attacks to be Armour Piercing.

The Razor Standard gives the special rule to models, not to their weapons, therefore it's close combat only, as described in the Special Rules section of the rulebook.

Thanks Eric, that sums it up perfectly. I couldn't believe how hard people were arguing on Asrai.org. Even after someone posted the exact rulebook wordings and pretty much exactly what you said. It was like they were banging their heads against a brick wall. Its too bad because armour piercing glade guard or scouts would be awesome but I think its better this way.
