Fantasy Reading Suggestions?

Post  epengr on Mon May 17, 2010 2:20 pm

Since the topic of literature has come up, can anyone suggest some good reading material to get the the WH mood?

For fantasy, I've read:

Robert Jordan - 7 1/2 of Wheel of time novels
George R R Martin - A Game of Thrones (book 1)
Christopher Paolini - Eragon and Eldest
Terry Pratchett - Everything he's written
Piers Anthony - Xanth books 1-4
I'm sure I'm forgetting some...

I'm currently reading: Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke

I'm looking for more grand adevnture and epic battles and less politicing, intreague and back stabbiness. Fast moving exciting and quicker reads are better since I have a short attenion span (as you may have deduced from the number of unfinished series I listed...)

Thanks!

I just read the Temeraire series (the first 6 books anyway) and I recommend it. Napoleonic wars - with dragons! I also enjoyed Stephen R. Lawhead's Robin Hood trilogy (Hood, Scarlet & Took), its a gritty re-boot of the classic legend set earlier and in Wales instead of Nottingham. He did the same thing with King Arthur in the creatively titled book "Arthur" which was also good.

Or if you are in the mood for some good old fashioned hack-em-up fantasy reading I recommend any of the Forgotten Realms novels by R.A. Salvatore. Starting with "The Crystal Shard" right up to the latest "The Ghost King" I've read and enjoyed them all.

One other series of note is by Terry Brooks. It is a very different kind of fantasy series than any that I've read and it was quite good with a pleasant surprise at the end if you are a fan of his Shannara series. It starts with the Word/Void series, then continues with the Genesis of Shannara series.

here are links:

Temeraire: Click Here
Hood: Click Here
Arthur: Click Here
R.A. Salvatore: Click Here
Terry Brooks: Click Here

Thats a pretty comprehensive list of the books that I've read in the last few years!

I tried the Shannara series. I liked it better when it was called Lord of the Rings.

I read the original Shannara series way way back so I don't really remember it but the new ones (Word/Void & Genesis of Shannara) are pretty good.

Some of the GW books are quite good. I especially liked the Vampire Wars trilogy by Steven Savile.

I knew I forgot one, I did start reading The Sword of Shannara but it didn't really grab me. I could try to finish it. Very LotR though, I do recall, but he does sight that as an inspiration...
