Game(s) next monday (25th)

Post  nathanr on Sun Jan 17, 2010 7:06 pm

Anyone want a game or several next monday the 25th? I was hoping to be able to get one in earlier than that but it seems as though my schedule is full. I am available anytime after 5:30. I only have room at my place for one table but I am free for the whole evening so a few people can come over if they want. I have a Wii and no good games. Alternately, if someone with more space and tables wants to host I will be happy to come over!

Lets get some more people out! It would be nice to play some new opponents, I don't think I've ever played William and it seems like forever since I last played Kendric. Of course I'd also like to move up the ladder so either of the Mercier brothers would be good too.

Hey Eric, are you running 2 doomwheels in your Skaven army now? I suppose for the sake of surprise you shouldn't tell me and I'll find out when we play on friday. I'm cooking up a pretty nasty wood elf army so don't hold back on your unit choices!

Yeah I am running two for now actually.

I was running Doomwheel and A-bomb, but I like the Doomwheels better, and I picked up the new one as part of my Masters winnings.

Interesting. I think wood elves are going to have a hard time against 1 doom wheel, let alone 2! I don't have any high-strength shooting to kill it from a distance and the lighting shots will wreak havok on my little units. Do they have any limitations on how they move or is it 3d6" in whichever direction you want with as many changes in direction as you want?

I'll play you after I play Eric! Here's hoping I manage to beat Eric so I can then challenge for your ladder spot! What if we say the winner of Eric and me plays you Dominique and the loser plays Andre, that way all the games are ladder challenges.

It moves like a chariot, so when it's not charging, unlimited pivots, so it can move any distance up to the amount rolled.

The rules are unclear, so I have been playing that it doesn't have to declare a charge but it does have to contact the part of the enemy that was in arc at the start of the movement, because that seems the most disadvantageous to myself.
I just don't know how to play with declared charges and random distance...

Its strengths are that it has 5 T6 wounds with a 4+ save, does D6+1 S6 impact hits on the charge, does D3 S6 impact hits when not charging, gets 2d6 S2 attacks and has the lightning bolts. 3 shots that automatically hit the nearest unit, friend or foe. You roll the artillery dice once, and all shots are equal to that strength. You resolve the bolts individually one at a time, which means that against small units with characters, the first bolt can reduce the unit size meaning that further bolts can randomize onto characters. Since the bolts do D6 wounds each, I have actually killed a few generals this way. It shoots lightning even when engaged and even into engaged units - whatever is closest gets hit.

Its weaknesses are that its random movement makes charging a little unpredictable.
It isn't unbreakable. It's not even stubborn. So in a protracted combat it can lose to ranked infantry or fighty monsters on the charge, and that's a pretty common way for me to lose the thing.
It has to try and fire its lightning every turn. It can take a Ld test on 7 to try and not shoot, but if it fails, it shoots. This means that deploying and moving the things can be a bit of a trick. Putting one near another one is generally inadvisable for instance.
If it suffers a wound outside of the close combat phase, it has to take a leadership test. if it fails it immediately moves 3d6" in a random direction and can squish your own units... I haven't ever had this happen yet, but I haven't had the things get hurt much in or outside of combat. But you're Wood Elves. If anyone can make it run amok you can.

Do you think this is going to be errata'd to move like a Chaos Spawn?

0% chance of that. That would make it useless combined with its lightning rules.
They will errata its charging procedure.

Thanks for all the information Eric, the rules you are using for charging sound right to me. What happens when the artillery dice comes up as a misfire when rolling for the strength of the lightning? Also, the range of the lightning is 18" right?

If anyone can make it run amok you can.

I'm going to try my best!

Misfire table:
1-2 it takes D6 S6 hits and rolls 1D6 dice less for movement permanently - cumulative.
3-5 it immediately moves its movement in a random direction.
6 for the remainder of the battle it rolls an extra 1D6 for movement.

The range of the lightning is 18" and it does not need line of sight.

So is the doomwheel actually a chariot as in strength seven hits destroy automatically? I think the line up sounds good Dom and I may actually go use the dens terrain and get a game in first unless there are other willing parties.
