Scroll Caddy
After not touching a brush for a couple months (Golf season!) I painted this guy up. I figure him as a scroll caddy wizard. Tried to work on my blue because I DO need to get better and more comfortable with some new colours. Not too much but good to be back painting.

I like it, everything is smooth and well-blended. It seems like it needs an accent color though. You have the hint of one in the feather but I think it needs to be present somewhere else on the model as well.

Agreed Nathan. Originally the shoulder gay poofy things and the feather were going to be the same, but then I didn't bother.

What color do you use to shade your blue? I like the depth you are getting in the shadows.

Re: Scott's newest mini
It's just mostly the GW black wash. I used the GW blue wash to help with the transitions but the heavy shading is straight black wash glazed in.

That looks great Scott. Your regular colours are in there but the character really pops. Everything looks more crisp than usual with a very balanced feel to it. Even though it's a Dwarf, I really, really like what you did.

As Don says it is done with some of your usual colors but to me it seems like you've ramped up the contrast compared to what you normally do. I like it. The fur on the cloak could use a final highlight but I'm sure if you were painting this as a display model you'd have done that and a lot of other little things that take a lot of time and effort and amount to the difference between a great tabletop mini and one for the display case.

1 dwarf done. 100 to go. Can I optimistically believe you'll have an army to play by next winter?

Painted this up for a comp. A real quickie, it's painted up in my Daughter's favorite colour. It's called Emmy Space Princess.

That looks like a super small fig. I'd love for you to show me sometime how you highlight black such as what you did on the visor.

Re: Scott's newest mini
I've found when I paint black I don't use black paint. A dark german grey or really dark green and glaze it a bunch with a black premade wash. Lot's o layers of that. It seems to help the transition and on things like leather it feels more natural looking then a flat black coat of paint. That's all.

Re: Scott's newest mini
I really need to paint a model again just for the sake of painting it. I've fallen back into the rut of batch painting to tabletop quality. You should get back into posting painting tips Scott, I've forgotten more than I remember now and a lot of the new guys could really benefit from your know-how.

Re: Scott's newest mini
Just the basics again. Like how do you prepare your minis for painting? what kind of brushes do you use? Prime black, white, grey? Spray or brush-on primer or just a basecoat of paint? How much do you water your paint down? Do you use a wet-pallette?
You know, all the things that separate a good painter from the rest of us schmucks.

Re: Scott's newest mini
Blacks and leather browns blow me away. I really have a hard time with those. I think you let yourself down on the metals though, the highlights look abit too large or shiny. Not sure what it is?

They could just be too large and shiny. The shoulder pad has a lip running around it, like a space marine shoulder pad which accounts for that highlight looking pretty jarring.
