I had a great time. Went 2 wins and a tie, 47 battle points out of a possible 60.

I was a little surprised at the painting process as 1 of the top 3 armies was unfinished. Geoff Klassen had an amazing looking dwarf army that deserved to be in the top 3. I'd like to see the painting scores as I sense a bit of old boys club. Don did win top painting with his khemri army which was deserved.

I too had a good time but not a great result.  Par for the course for me I guess.

First game was against a skaven army, it was softer than Carson's skaven army and I didn't feel like I was really hard-pressed at any point in the game.  I managed a 20-0 victory.

Second game was against Matt Lau's wood elves.  I don't know why but every time I go to this tournament I play Matt Lau.  He's good but I feel like I had my chance to beat him and didn't.  I made a few dumb moves and he capitalized. The tsn turning point was a charge from my errant knights on his treeman.  3 S7 impact hits, 16 S6 and 3 S4 attacks weren't enough to kill the treeman and then he failed to kill my back rank so his wardancers could just barely see a sliver of my footprint for a rear charge.  Elsewhere my Pegasus knightsground down a unit of archers and my questing knights ground up against some dryads.  My other Pegasus knights failed several charges against his waywatchers.  My knights of the realm and grail knights were stuck playing chicken with his general and wild riders.  I finally took a gamble and sacrificed my grail knights for a shot at his archer unit holding his wizard and bsb but my errant knights couldn't hold against his treeman and wardancers which opened the flank to my knights.  20-0 loss

Last game was also against wood elves.  The last 6 games of this tournament I've faced 4 wood elf armies.  The scenario was hold the centre and the centre of the table had 3 forests which touched each other.  I lost 20-0.  I should have been more patient maybe, I could have won secondary last turn simply because I had more scoring units.  Instead I charged with everything into the forest turn 1.  It didn't go well.

Thats a lot of Wood Elves...you must be sick of those Treeman.

Despite your struggles with the Wood Elves I bet you had a blast.

I would luv to watch your army pound some elves lol

Ya, congrats to Carson for almost bringing home the bacon!  Good to see O&G placing that high.

*edit*  Looking at this further, I killed it in victory points, but my lack of secondary objectives ruined me.  Matt Lau, seems to understand how important secondaries are and uses that Sylvan Elf army effectively to make sure he gets those.  I always go out to draw blood, but those objectives are soooo important.  I like that you should design your army with that in mind.

Carson,, how did you do in objectives?  With a good run, it looks like you could have hit 3rd or even 2nd place.

Made all my objectives other than my game with phil which we tied in objectives. Looking at my score I should of had 47 battle points but no big deal at this point.

Ive been kind of changing my mind on the objectives swing. It sucks when it happens to you, but its just a part of the game to take into account and plan for.

One point of concern I have for tournaments now are the amount of 20-0 that is regularily happening. Is it the match-ups or builds or what? I think maybe the vp point spreads need to be re examined.

Yes .....way to go Carson and Don...well done.

I agree those secondary objectives are causing issues.

I like them...despite getting bitten by them on at least half of my current battles, including last night against Pete. They are cool.

Make you think about your entire battle plan more. And they will make you alter some moves that you would normally do....I have gone after points instead of objectives and it has cost me.

Hopefully most of these guys come to your tourney in jan an we shall see how they fair with a bit more transparent scoring.

To go from a 10-10 draw, to a 13-7 win is 902 points. So technically in every situation on the VP chart secondary is worth 900+ points. To give up secondary in a game, you have to be 1500-1800 points AHEAD just to pretty much break even or squeak the win.. Yikes.

I must admit I don't love secondary objectives the way they exist right now. Maybe they'll be changing it in 2.0? I hope so but we'll just have to wait and see.

What is missing from today game is composition to balance the armies even more. We haven't done that in years and not sure if we ever should...

In THEORY, 9th Age is supposed to be balanced enough that comp isn't necessary. That's the goal for 2.0 anyways.

Ive always been a fan of comp, however,  I don't see it working in todays game enviroment. The only possibilty I could see would be rewarding players that take more than minimum core.

I agree with Geoff...Army Comp should be rewarded.

A fair and balanced army I think encourages more players to join up. Sure ppl get excited when they see a Dragon on the table but min/max armies have always pushed ppl away and hurt the game.

Being out of the game so long I clearly recognize that the armies are trying to be more balanced and that is welcome.

Carson's idea of a bonus for taking more core units...I like it.

That still does not stop me from liking the effort players put into themed armies even if they get min/maxish to some degree.

Re: Edmonton Onslaught 2017. Oct 20-21

I have to say I don't think list comps are required in the current t9a environment, at least not at the tournament level. My main reason for thinking this is there is no way a person can min/max an army to be good against everything, it's just not possible. By min/maxing in a certain direction it improves your chances of winning against some army types, and lowers them against other types (ie your hard counter). For this reason I don't think comp is required for tournaments.

In terms of league play regarding new players and trying to draw new crowds, I think that building a "well balanced" list is definitely something we should all be doing. Min/maxed highly specific armies can be a nightmare to play against as the wrong list (even if an experienced player), and with the right list a person still has to understand all the nuances and rules to do it effectively (especially against an experienced player). In league play where it's 2 experienced regular players going at it I don't think comp matters, personally I would enjoy the challenge of trying to beat a super "hard" list, but that's talking about 2 people who are playing to become better players, not 2 people who are trying to learn the game and want to have some fun doing it, very different situations I think.

Also blanket comps don't work.... why on earth would you reward a dwarf player for spending more points then needed on grey beards .... I mean core cough cough. Or a warriors player to having more hard as nails warriors ?

Comp would only really work army specific. Reward each race for not taking all the best things. But by that time is it even worth it ? We all know that certain units just do better then others even though things are " balanced"

I agree with Dom. You could also put a restriction on certain magic items but again, to what purpose? In the end I think you just have to trust that the game is as balanced as it is going to get as-is.

Agree with Nathan, Nathan, Carson and Dom. Smile I was even going to post about core Dwarfs, but everyone's heard enough of my Dwarf jabs. For the most part, the broken lists you used to see don't exist anymore - and even the power units are pretty scarce. There's very few, if any, truly, honestly broken units. Comp is a thing of the past which is a really good sign that things are much more balanced than they used to be.
