Squalie's Eleventyith Daemon army.

Post  squalie on Tue Jul 05, 2016 10:56 pm

So, yet AGAIN I'm going to do a Daemon army.  They are mostly assembled and I have a paint scheme (the pale flesh look I was going to do the Savage Orcs in).  Since you need a center piece for the army I bought a Skarbrand model...just so I could cut it up. Smile

This is my Bloodthirster.  I really liked the stance of the Skarbrand model and the beat up face, but I hated the torn up wings so I replaced them with Balrog wings.  It took a lot of fiddling and shaving but I got them to work.

What is it with you Moose Jaw people and your multiple armies? I like this guy. I think he looks sufficiently dangerous and Killy to be a bloodthirster.

Here's a test Bloodletter. Purples and blues that turn into black. The sword is supposed to be bursting with energy. I think I'm going forward with this. Just primed the 10 Flesh Hounds and going to paint them like this.

Love the sword. I'd put a touch of green into the transition to black on the skin but maybe that's just the holiday Monday booze talking.

I like it alot! the colours worked well. The sword is cool too, going to look good in a large unit. You going to try and translate that style to the other gods units or do something else for Nurgle / Slannesh etc?

I don't like the sword. The work on it is cool but I completely disagree that it'll work in a unit of 20. that level of work tends to get washed out at the unit scale I find. I personally feel work like that is an easy and effective way to have unit champions and hero's stand out. My 2 cents. Good work on the mini!

I need to see what basing you have in mind. To me it seems almost as if it lacks something in transistion from the body to the sword.

*digesting advice*

I like the sword and as always the pictures suck. There is blue that is between the purple and black transition but for some reason the picture just looks purple.

I'd say proceed with what you've got. that sword looks like a ridiculous amount of work if you have to do a lot of them but if you do them all to that quality it'll look good (despite what Scott says). I'm interested in what your bases are going to look like too.

Makin progress, I think I can pull this off for Onslaught. I have the recipes down, now I just have to assembly line the shit outta this army.

I've come to the conclusion this army won't be trying for a painting award, and I'm ok with that. This will be a good ol fashioned table top army that I can play and add to for years. I've got Daemon blood in me and I have to stop fighting it. Very Happy

Those hounds look great in a unit. Individually they look ok but the light to dark blending effect is multiplied when you see it in a unit. It is really striking.

I'm not sure I like the different blue in the daemonettes. It looks like you forgot the purple recipe and said "close enough". Maybe I'll change my mind when I see the unit alongside the rest of the army. You are definitely making progress though, keep it up!

The test Daemonette used the same blue as the Dogs - maybe I should go back to that. I went with Gulliman glaze, as it was brighter but I'm all about cohesion so I'll probably redo all the Nettes.

As I said, my gut tells me I can do better, but I've made peace with the fact I'm just putting a gaming army on the table and moving on to the other 3 armies I need to paint. Smile

Nothing wrong with that sentiment!

I think the daemonettes should mirror the scheme of the rest of the army. For cohesion. Otherwise whats the point of breaking coda and doing purple khorne shit?

Hounds are great. Good work on awesome sculpts!

The army group shot is a good indicator fo how the sword efforts look from 3 feet away. I stand by the thought that a unit painted like that would defeat it's purpose and wash itself out.

Well done man!

The hounds do look great, if you wanted to keep the deamonette color you could add a blue wash to the bloodletters.

Actually, if you look at the bottom left of the picture you can see the original Daemonette in the "Khorne Blue". I'll go back to that, the more I look at the bright blue the more Disney it looks. It just looked striking the first time I saw it and kept running with it. I'm feeling better now. Smile
