Early War / Mid War / Late War

Post  Kal on Wed Jan 27, 2016 2:07 pm

So i'm clearly getting ahead of myself but that is definitely my style. but i notice that "our group" plays late war only.

Just wondering why? more toys? Because i was thinking i wouldnt mind having one army for each period. Is this something anyone else is interested in or thinking about?

Dont get me wrong im gonna be buying and finishing my Late War Canadian's before i even touch anything but not gonna lie the other years interest me too. heck even the WW1 type tanks excite me. So funky how they were trying new things. and they we metal behemoths that made no sense haha.

I've got enough desert rat style British stuff to play some early way lists. That could be fun.
And I've got enough to play a few EW German lists too.

But- I like late war the most. Best toys for sure.

Started with Late war because that's what I was told is the most popular era.  That said, the movies and stuff I grew up on depict Late War WWII pretty much exclusively so it's what I know. I also like Cromwell tanks which are a late-war only item.

I can make a mid-war list with the stuff that I have but early war would require a whole new set of toys which I'm not excited about.  I figure I'm good with 2/3rds of the war.

This seems to be the general idea im getting. Late war all the way. because early war is completely new figs. I am completely ok with only Late War and even skipping Mid War. only reason for Mid war for me would be a germam tank list because i LOVE that grey steel paint job which Don tells me isnt available late war. but even then id rather buy and build my Late War Canadian's first.

No takers on Early War eh? Does this game have a WW I version? that or any other eras popular at all?

You should try a few more games than 3. Then decide if you want to explore Early War. Wink Enthusiasm is good, but you're starting to leak all over....

LW
Has the biggest and baddest toys.
Most media/documentaries ect focus later in the war.
FOW has focused on LW by releasing the most models and lists

I mostly play german but can play other nations.
EW-British, Italian, German, Soviet
MW British, Italian, German
LW -German

There are different dynamics in the different eras.
EW- effective defensive fire vs tanks is limited so generally assaults are more viable. Shooting out enemys is less effective due to limited and expensive breakthrough guns and low FP weapons. Ranged guns cost more so most tanks are 16"-24" range. 1390(last years points) also meant tough decisions in list making.
MW-Limited quanitiy of lists/variety. My experience is its generally repointed LW as people play with what they have.
LW- FOW mostly focused on LW especially when many of us started. Most lists most variety. Last years 1900 was really too high. I have been playing 1420 and it makes the game much quicker and changes the meta/lists.

For WWII yes, but AIW & TY are leaps and bounds better than WWII

If you are interested in trying other Eras let me know - I almost have an army for each era -> TY (Team Yankee) is still a work in progress.
I also do a demo the first Wednesday of every month at Tramp's. Next month (January) ends my rotation with TY and begins again with WWI in February, EWWII March, MWWII April...!

I'll pass on the other era's now but thank you. Trimming back my table top and switching to more console gaming again. But I am going to be trying to get into Late War for FOW and actually have some games. And actually learn the game lol

Between FOW and 40k I have 2-4 whole armies sitting around for games I don't even know how to play lol

Let me know when you want to have a game - always up for a game of FoW. I took a look at your list and made a couple of suggestions. That being said try them out the way you want/figured it out it could suite your play style.
Or, can put you in touch with a couple of players in MJ as well.

I would definitely drive to Regina for a game. Let me get the army together and we'll figure something out.
