Carson vs Flames of War

Post  Carson on Mon Aug 17, 2015 6:58 pm

Thought I'd better start a thread here for my own hobby works for this great game.

Most of you know that I already have a fairly large German force that I can pick and choose from to build a company. I'll post up some pics of these in the near future.
What I'm working on right now is a Hungarian force built around the units that took part in the fighting around Budapest near the end of the war. Stalingrad of course is widely known but few will readily know about the intense fighting that took place in and near the Hungarian capital. Its ferocity and levels of casualties can rival those seen at Stalingrad.

The initial company build will consist of a Hungarian assault gun company composed of a mix of stug's and Hungarian assault guns supported by Hungarian assault platoons and 2 Tigers.........Several Tigers were given to the Hungarians to aid in their defense of the capital.

Once the infantry arrive and I assemble them I'll post pics of the force pre-paint.

This is why I like Flames of War, there are all these real life stories behind every force you could build. You can't write this stuff, it actually happened.

After a lengthy wait I finally received all the toys for this Hungarian force. Below is a quick pic of what is in the list.

Roltamagyus Uteg (assault gun battery) Confident Veteran

hq
2 stug g

combat
3 stug g
3 stug g
3 Zrinyi II

divisional support
2 tiger IE
1 puskas platoon (infantry)
1 assault pioneer platoon (mechanized)
1 armoured car platoon with turan I tanks

sporadic air support JU 87d

The Hungarian Assault gun companies that fought in and around Budapest were very experienced and are thus rated confident veteran. They were armed with a mix of German armour and Hungarian armour. So to represent this I deliberately mixed up the platoons in the company. A small number of Tigers were delivered to the Hungarians just before the fighting at Budapest took place, so to keep in theme I added two tigers to the mix. I actually prefer numbers of medium tanks over the beasts in the actual game but I went with the tigers to reflect what an actual assault gun battery would of looked like at Budapest.

As for painting, The Hungarians had their own uniform but adopted the German helmut design. As for armour, they really had a mix of patterns. Most German armour was left in the dunkelgelb primer color while the tigers were mixed with some having the German 3 color camoflouge  and others the basic primer. Hungarian armour retained a mix of Dark green similar to Russian armour and others a unigue Hungarian version of the German camo. So to reflect this I will also include a mix in the company.

The one issue I'm wondering about is what basing to use. The fighting took place in late autumn and early winter. I have an idea to base the infantry in a mix of grass/ snow/frost, and the armour with frost effects similar to what a lot of Russian armour looked like.

Any thoughts on this?

Yeah, Late 44/early 45. I'm also putting together the German Feldherrhallen Division that fought alongside the Hungarians in Budapest.

I prefer the game at Mid war by a large margin. I find mid war is where you have to make the most choices about what you field in a 1500 point army.

A late war Army for me for feels like I am looking to stuff things in AFTER I've picked my core forces. At MId war same point level I don't get to take more than maybe 80% of what I want to field as a core force. I prefer all points based systems that have that feel to it.

I will be playing more games in general once the golf shuts down. I look forward to dicing off against some mid war peoples. Also want to try out War Throne, bought Kings of War in case War throne aint no good, and picked up frostgrave which looks interesting as well.

But golf trumps all. Love that game.

You're welcome for the threadjack Carson.

Actually, what I typically field in Late war easily transfers to mid war.

That's how awesome I am, in case you hadn't realized yet, Radom.

I think the questions about Late war are that the points level are set too high for some people. You would still have to make tough choices if the points were set at 1500-1700

Got back to some hobby fun this afternoon... a quick pic of some typical basing pre-primer. It consists of milliput with small paches of sand/gravel glued down. For larger figs I generally prime with grey but for FOW I've  gone back to black as it works well for gaps and shading.

didn't realize it was out of focus till now Embarassed

How do you find painting them when they're all based up already? I couldn't do it, I have to paint the mini's separately then attach to a base and paint the base after.

I paint mine after they're based also. It's a by product of "assembling figs first" so you can game with them, and then paint when you get around to it.

Since you don't game Scott, you have the luxury of painting your figs first. Very Happy

I position them on the base so that I can get a brush to each one reasonably well.

I base mine first too. It works for me so that I can be messy with my basing and then I'm also more inclined to be careful with my painting.

Here is the platoon leader team for the assault pioneers. I went with the snowy grass theme to match the time frame. I'm going to white wash the armour also, I'm thinking it will look pretty cool once done.
