Painting Nazis

Post  epengr on Thu Mar 05, 2015 10:51 pm

Does he mean Painting Nazis or Painingt Nazis?

Yes.

I have my eye on a certain few toys that I'd like in my first army, but it seems that the SS is the only crew cool enough to get to play with them all...

My dilemma is that I'm not sure that I want to commit to an SS force, and the thought of painting pea-dot camo fills me with dread.

So if you were facing an all SS force, and the troops (all SS) were actually wearing field grey, would that offend you?

To be honest, some of the official exemplar pea dot looks gawd awful anyways:

This is just... cooler:

I'd be fine with the grey but I know nothing about anything.

Sounds to me like you've just decided to play regular Wehrmacht and not SS. If you want to play SS, paint them up properly! You can do it! I also have an official Vallejo Flames of War still sealed SS paint set I would sell you for 15$. WOW!

I am serious though. No shame in playing regular german infantry. But if you wanna be the SS you gots to look like the SS!

Just one mans opinion though.

Shame?  No.  But the SS gets better toys! (And UGLY uniforms...)

I'll take you up on that paint set though.

You're looking at a bad example of the uniform painting though. There is no shading or highlighting at all on the pea dot uniform there. Check out some large scale painted examples then start looking at better small scale stuff. If I was doing it I'd basecoat the whole shebang, then shade it all in a mix of 1:1:1 GW Black wash, brown wash, Uniform. I do that a couple times then work on bringing back some of the basecoat and some highlighting. It'd look better.

It won't be quick but it shouldn't be super hard if you're willing to take the time and do it slow.

I'll get you the paint set whenever you want. Lemme know what works for you.

Hmm, no idea... When are you next by the Den? maybe Saturday?

Are you working on a FoW still at all? If so, name a tank and I'll see if I can print one. We can make it $15 + a tank for the paint.

Still working on fleshing out my Americans, I'd try to paint up a printed tank to see how she goes.

Is there a convenient time/place to get that paint from you tomorrow?

Yeah man, sorry I didn't reply earlier. I'll be at the den about 11:00. Got to pick my daughter up from Art class a couple blocks away at 11:15.

Indeed! How dare you with the life and the living an' all!

11:00's good, see you there.

Printer's been acting up, but I'll have something for you Wink. You guys must understand, a home built 3D printer isn't a cheap easy way to infinite miniatures - it's a whole other fiddly, painstaking hobby that happens to intersect this one at times...

They weren't sure why you left paint on the counter, so they had reshelved it... I sorted out our (or, possibly, just stole a paint set...) Might want to tell them next time Smile

There's an envelope there for you.

So here's my first few attempts at paint this little bastards.  The SS Kompanie that I am planning doesn't need rifle teams, so I started with a rifle team from the Open Fire set and tried a basic Wehrmacht uniform:

Then I took a crack at two SS camp patterns (I hate Pea dot.  Won't do it.)  I figure I can distinguish Platoons with different camo patterns, since the SS apparently had them all in service at the same time anyways.

Oak Tree A:

...had a minor wash disaster with the MG dude on this base Sad

Plane Tree:

I think I'm more impressed with the camera than the paint jobs.  They look better in person, and pretty awesome "on the table", not so hot under the macro lens...

Plane tree looks almost too... American, for me.

And since I'll be short a few bases of MG teams to get my SS kompanie into the field, I was playing around with some ideas for proxies:
