When you say low cost do you mean platoon values?

Low cost in real money. If I can keep the cost close to $200 with a fun, effective list I'll consider it a resounding success.

nathanr wrote:Ok, so I've been fiddling with German lists and I think I've come up with what I think I'd like to build.  I'm going for low cost:

Panzer Kampfgruppe from Desperate Measures - Confident Veterans

HQ - 2 Panzer IV w/ Assault Rifle Tank Escorts - 205
Panzer Platoon - 3 Panzer IV w/ Assault Rifle Tank Riders - 305
Panzer Platoon - 3 Panzer IV w/ Assault Rifle Tank Riders - 305
Panzer Platoon - 3 StuG G w/ Assault Rifle Tank Riders - 340
Panzer Anti-aricraft Gun Platoon - 2 Wirbelwind (Quad 2cm) - 110
Schwere Panzer Platoon - 1 Tiger I E - 215
Tracked panzerspah Platoon - 3 Panzer II L Luchs - 115
Gepanzerte Panzergrenadier Platoon - 6 MG/Panzerfaust Teams & Cmd Panzerfaust MG team - 285

Total points 1880.  20 points seems like a lot to leave on the table but I don't know what else I should add or change.
This is a good list but your small platoons are fragile. Why not make it 6 platoons?

I actually have already made some changes although most of my platoons are still small in size:

HQ - 2 Panzer IV w/ Assault Rifle Tank Escorts - 205
Panzer Platoon - 3 Panzer IV w/ Assault Rifle Tank Escorts - 305
Beute Panzer Platoon - 3 T-34 obr 1942, 1 T-34/85 obr 1944 - 330
Panzer Platoon - 3 StuG G w/ Assault Rifle Tank Escorts - 340
Panzer Anti-aricraft Gun Platoon - 2 Wirbelwind (Quad 2cm) - 110
Schwere Panzer Platoon - 1 Tiger I E - 215
Tracked panzerspah Platoon - 3 Panzer II L Luchs - 115
Gepanzerte Panzergrenadier Platoon - 6 MG/Panzerfaust Teams & Cmd Panzerfaust MG team - 285

It doesn't solve the issue of small, fragile platoons but I kind of like the versatility that having several small platoons gives me over 1 large one. Maybe I'll change my mind after a few games though. The CHQ tanks can join the other Panzer IV's and make a pretty solid 5-tank platoon and the Tiger is just there for fun. The 3 recce tanks are for harrassing the flanks and doing recce stuff so their small platoon size is maybe a strength rather than a weakness. That leaves the StuG platoon. I figure they can hold their own and the Panzer IV's will likely take most of the attention away from them anyway.

I painted 4 6pdrs last night. I confirmed that I hate painting infantry. They aren't great but ok for tabletop and I can't be bothered to do them better than that. My to-do pile is getting smaller and smaller, just 17 infantry teams and 4 jeeps to go!

One of my coworkers is setting up a CNC router table, should be up and running in May. I'm going to see if I can get some road sections and Dug-in markers made and if those work well I may try to branch out into more elaborate things. I could theoretically have buildings made like what 4ground does. I don't know the cost yet but this first run I'm going to get him to make a few extra dug-in markers so if you're interested just let me know.

Everything will be made from hardboard, probably as thin as I can get it 1/10" to 1/8" ish.

I'm trying to get through it before I buy my Germans. It's like a race between my productivity and my urge to buy.

I'm hoping to get through the 4 jeeps, command team for the 6 pdrs and the 2 dismounted recce teams this weekend leaving just the two airlanding platoons. That might be too ambitious though. If I can get the jeeps done I'll be happy.

Oh - sorry - thought you had bought them already.
I would suggest you playing them like that and see if you want to go that route.

Painted 4 jeeps and the dismounted Recce rifle teams today. If I get a chance I'll throw some paint on the 6 pdr command team tomorrow. I find that I can get into a groove with these guys and churn them out pretty quickly actually. I may need to advance the German buying schedule so I've got something to paint in May!

Pretty sure the word I used was fragile.
No, it's not bad you just need to
1. always stormtrooper away
2. don't get hit that much
3. try it out before sinking a bunch of $ into something you may not like/want

I figure most of the models in my list will work in almost every German list (I have yet to play against a German company with no Halftrack-mounted infantry, Panzer IV's, or StuG's) and the fringe stuff like the tank escorts, Wirbelwinds and light tank recce is what makes me excited about this list.  Even if I hate this list after playing it a few times I doubt if I'll have any buyer's remorse.

It is good advice though.

Well, I finished painting my two platoons of infantry. My company is fully painted! I still have a few things I want to get done like dug-in markers but for now I'm going to take a break and paint some Warhammer for a bit.

I'll break out the light tent and take some pictures tonight. The infantry aren't much to look at, they just take a long time to paint. The trouble with British Airborne is that they had camo jackets and a ton of extra equipment so painting each guy is a 12-step process, 14 if they happen to have a red beret.

At least their platoon size is small so I'm not painting 10 teams per platoon and there's only 4 to a team too so I really can't complain.
