Calgary Tournaments?

Post  nathanr on Sun Sep 07, 2014 1:40 pm

Hey, can someone in the know give me a list of upcoming tournaments in Calgary? I've got a hankerin' for a road trip!

Also, if there is a suitable event coming up does anyone else want to join me?

Ha! Was just going to post about this.

This years Onslaught event, in Edmonton, is on Oct 26-27. I have already talked to Keiran about it and the players pack should have been listed this weekend. I think I'm about 99% commited to that event and Carson has mentioned he's 90%.

I think we should do another "van" trip and see who may be interested?!

I'll have a think about that, I was hoping for a Calgary trip so I could potentially convince my brother to play as well. Edmonton was fun last year though so I could potentially be convinced.

Who leaves early!? That's a dick move.

Edmonton does put on a good show. Sign me up! Now, lets talk transportation and accommodations.

I have a minivan, it seats 6 comfortably and 7 uncomfortably. The West Edmonton Mall Inn is clean and close to the venue and across the street from the Mall. It is also cheaper than the Fantasyland hotel. That said, I'd not prepared to foot the bill this time around and get paid later so if someone else wants to do the driving and booking I'll be happy to pay my share up front and ride in any vehicle and stay in any hotel.

Yup, fully painted. Anything that isn't painted counts as dead.

It is tremendously cool to be able to play in a tournament where every army is painted. I absolutely loved it last time. You could tell that everyone there cared about the models that they brought to the table.

I agree, leaving early is a dick move.

So the event is Saturday Oct 25, 2400 points and only 24 spots. I think we should follow Nathan's lead on the Hotel choice as it seemed to work out great for that crew. We totally need the Van! It's not a road trip without the Van!!!!

And anyone wanting to join should have enough scratch to go on the trip, it's not fair to put pressure on someone else to foot the bill for your entertainment.

Yup, fully painted. Anything that isn't painted counts as dead.

True. Anything not painted at the start of the game is considered dead and removed from play. Serious s***.

That's what bandage tape and ball gags are for. Stupid.

Always with the ball gags?

Anyone concerned about not being painted - you have over six weeks. Seriously.... a month and a half. You can do it!

Ok, I'll drive. I checked the hotel and it is $174/night. Fantasyland hotel is over $200/night.

If everyone wants a bed to themselves it'll be $174/person + $60 gas + $60 tournament fee so we're looking at roughly $300 per person.

We can probably find a cheaper hotel to bring that number down a bit if it is too high.

What is the usual turn out for a big event like that?

They've got 24 spots available and it will likely sell out. Last year 5 of us went.

Nice. Is it just for bragging rights or are their prizes?

There are prizes but I go for the fun and the experience of playing people outside the usual league. Warhammer is a very different animal outside our friendly circle. At this tournament the gloves come off and a lot of them are in it to win it. Not to say that the players there are jerks, everyone I played last year was very nice. Even the guy who brought the typical Warriors of Chaos netlist was a pleasant enough person.

The way I see it, if we regularly send 4 or 5 guys to the Alberta tournaments and leave good impressions when we do, eventually some of them are going to make their way to our tournaments.

That logic is admittedly sound. I haven't played enough to go to a place like that with enough confidence. As it stands I'm gonna need to put in some major time before the campaign starts to start honing my skills. And by putting in major time I mean getting my ass handed to me. lol.

Has anyone had success in registering for the onslaught event?

Should we change the title of this thread or start another to make arrangements and get a travel roster?
