Water effects?

Post  squalie on Mon Jan 06, 2014 11:38 am

I'm looking to make water effects on a few bases. What works best in your experience?

White Glue? Epoxy resin? Does the Den carry a product that would make me happy?

While I don't have any real experience with the product, I know that Hobby World caries some water effect product in bottles for about $16, if I remember right. Probably worth looking into.

That kind of depends on what you want your final result to be. For murky still water, you could get away with Elmer's glue. For shimmery still water, you'd have to use resin or gel paste. For textured water, gel paste and sculpting putty (depending on how choppy you want the water). Golden does 3 different grades of gel paste, I think. I also know that Woodland Scenics does a couple of products for water, but I have no experience with them.
On my elf bases I've used some green stuff putty on the larger ones to create 'waves'. Then, after painting the water colour, I added the medium grade gel paste for final texture and shine.

I should add that the gel paste is artist quality, and therefore takes paint very well. If doing marshes, you could just mix in your colour and lay it down in gobs. If you use the lightest grade of gel paste, it will settle well.
