squalie and Chaostonnians. Past the point of no return...

Post  squalie on Sun Dec 02, 2012 12:30 pm

There are others who search for the Grail....

Although interested in Bretonnia, I never really liked the models. I always thought that they should be a little more gritty than we usually see them. I had an idea to toughen up Bretts by using models that were "harder" looking. It evolved into making a Chaos version of Bretonnia. I had the idea that Chaos armies noticed the benefits of the Lance formation and realised that a Trebuchet was "a good idea". It just kind of went from there.

It wasn't as easy (or cheap)as I thought to muster up the 50 or so 6th edition Chaos Knights I would need. After buying all the character models I needed for conversions and buying packet after packet of Empire Lances and other bits for conversions and alternate Trebuchets, I realized (no joke) that it would have been cheaper to start the Forge World Chaos Dwarf army I wanted. Seriously - no joke.

Anyways, here's what I have put together so far with explanations on where I'm headed with it. I'm open to suggestions so feel free to offer advice. I THINK I'm going to do a paint scheme much like what's painted on the original box for the Chaos Knights. Lots of black, Golds and Blues. I'd like an evil, regal look to the Knights. I'm also using the Game zone Anointed Knights to represent Knights of the Grail.. I'll post more pictures as the army comes along, but here's a few to get started.

Thanks and let me know what you think, good or bad.

Getting started:

The units as they sit know:

Going to be my BSB, with a custom banner. I "modified" his hand to show that he's "giving the finger".Wink

My Lord made from a Vamp Lord and Chaos bits. I'm using a Chaos shield with a face to finish him off

Pegasus Knights with Chaos bits. The 6th ed. Knights fit perfectly. Like they were meant to be there.....

A mock up of my Trebuchet. I have 2 with each Dragon head version.

Again, an idea of what it'll all look like. Banners tacked on for show. I used the champ models as Standard Bearers instead.

Took a few minutes to do a couple test colours. The one on the right I used the traditional faded golds, but looks a little uninspired and "done before". I actually stole the same paint scheme for the one on the left from my Tomb Kings. I think I'm going to run with it. With a better cape and fur and finished with a shield they'll look exactly like I wanted them to.

Snow bases of course. Rolling Eyes

I agree, the one on the left. Hopefully its not too much more work.

I really like that look for gold, how do you get that effect? I'd like to steal it!

If you're talking about the one on the left, it's the same recipe I use for the Tomb Kings. I think it looks different as there's a lot more hard angles and edges with the Chaos Knights. The mithral silver picks up much better on these models and the scratch/scrape effect looks more natural.

Balthasar Gold
Then...
Gehennas Gold ( stipple effect )
Then...
Agrax Earthshade wash (don't be shy with it)
Then...
Mithral Silver edging (new colour is runefang steel)
