Winter 2012/2013 League Reporting Thread

Post  nathanr on Mon Oct 29, 2012 12:21 pm

The new league kicked off this weekend with a flurry of games in Moose Jaw. Thanks to Don for hosting. The ladder wasn't created yet so there were no ladder challenges but that doesn't matter!

My games were:

Non-league game vs Don (I played his TK which crushed my high elves)
Non-league game vs Dom (he used his wood elf/dwarf allied list and we played to a draw)
League game vs Andre (I scored a victory and I was fully painted)
Non-league mega battle with Shawn, Eric, Dom and Andre.
Non-league game vs Frank (I crushed his vampire counts, well my swordmasters did anyway)
League game vs Darren (I scored a victory in the blood or glory scenario, I was fully painted)
League game vs Don (Don crushed me even after finding out that his grail knights are only T3, I was fully painted)

It was a great weekend and I look forward to the next one. Now everyone please post your results here. If they aren't here they won't get counted. All future games should also be reported here. Please don't post points anymore, I have a spreadsheet that does it for me. Just post who played who, the result (ie: crushing victory/crushing loss, victory/loss, draw, non-league) and if you or your opponent was painted. If you aren't signed up for the league you can do that here: Fall/Winter Signup Thread

Thanks to everyone that made it over for the weekend. It was a good time and always looking for more people.

My games were:

TOMB KINGS

1. Previous league vs. Darren and Ogres - win
2. non-league vs. Nathan and HE - crushing victory
3. Final league vs. Carson and Empire - crushing victory

Tomb Kings for the win.

4. Don's HE (non league) vs. Carsons O&G - crushing victory

CHAOSTONNIANS

5. vs. Carson and his O&G - crushing victory
6. vs. Dom and WE's - crushing victory
7. vs. Andre and his O&G - victory or crushing victory?
8. vs. Nathan and HE's - victory or crushing victory?

8 games, 8 wins and the Bretonnians are off to a good start. I have to mention one thing though; I found out (and was devastated to learn) the Grail Knights are not toughness 4. So, I was cheating. I think that was an almost negligable influence in the games as they really didn't do much, but still - I don't know how I missed it and I simply assumed that a rare choice full of mounted "Heroes" would have better stats than a goblin. I feel shame and it's probably one of the most embarassing moments of my life (not even close). Anyways, that there's what it is.

Played a game with Dom tonight, it was an interesting game with some strange dice rolling on both sides. In the end my high elves were victorious with a crushing victory. I was painted while Dom was not and I took his ladder spot.

Played a game with Eric tonight. The den was full up so we went back to my place. Home field advantage was definitely in my favour as the first turn saw Eric lose somewhere in the neighbourhood of 10 guys to dangerous terrain tests. That was just foreshadowing of what was to come. I don't think a single dice roll came up in Eric's favour. By turn 3 I had a stranglehold on the game and Eric conceded. It was a ladder match which I successfully defended. Both of us were painted. Crushing victory for me although a rematch is in order as Eric's dice betrayed him tonight.

It went from bad to real bad as dice failed me, Slaan failed me, and even luck did not show up as one lone fig was left on the board and it was a slaughter.
Elves were fully painted i was not, league match, ladder match, slaughter for the Wood Elves.

Eric needs new dice. That hodge-podge mixture he uses just doesn't have any gaming magic. Pfft, everybody knows you need a hand picked dice cube for each army. Very Happy I've seen him roll some truly horrendous games - way worse than ststistics would imply.

Dom and I player 2 games yesterday. The first was the watchtower which Dom got control of and once I finally ousted the last guys through squigs and shooting my main unit decided to fail 2 animosities and not leave the building they were in. I had some classic 'this is what can happen with o and g' events but a notable fight was between my giant and his treeman. 2 turns of thump with club Dom passed an init 2 test then I only managed 4 wounds before dying and not falling ontop. Dom won by dice roll after 5 neither was fully painted 6-4 (I think we had played before but didn't report it).

Next game was dawn attack and again Dom got first turn. I had a building on one flank with nothing in the corner to occupy it but otherwise deployment for both was pretty decent. Lots of movement from one side of the board to the other with some long range elf shots. Skarsnik and his horde were the heroes as they felled a treeman some warhawks and Doms unit of archers with mage and bsb. My squigs did manage to chomp through some wardancers and even tried to take down a dragon which proved too much. I got the victory and Doms ladder spot 5-3

Dom and I played the Watchtower Scenario today. I will try to give you a little synopsis of the battle propr to giving you the results. Hopefully I get everything right. If not Dom, feel free to correct me.

Dom started the game in the watchtower at the centre of the table, so I had first turn. I was able to force him out with a unit of Treekin on turn 2, and then reinforced it with my Glade Guard on turn 3.

On one far side of the table, my Glade Guard Scouts and Waywatchers died a horrible death to his Wardancers and Dryads around turn 3, and my fairly equal number of dryads took on his dryads. I whiffed and got run down. I tied up his Wardancers and Dryads as long as possible on the far side of the board, but it wasn't very long, because I couldn't roll to save myself. heh heh.

On the other side of the table, the Treeman and Forest Dragon were destroying my army. Once they were finished picking their teeth with my troops, they moved to the middle, to take on my remaining troops. While holding the watchtower in the centre, his dragon and lord mopped up multiple units of dryads and treekin, ate my Great Eagle, and even took some bites out of my Treeman, leaving splinters all over the battlefield. That unit was amazingly powerful. I WANT ONE! Smile

My Treeman and Eagle flanked his dragon from both sides and his highborn and dragon died in this battle, but the dragon finished off my eagle before he died. Oh I love Dom's Dragon model. It is a Giant Owl, and looks amazingly cool, I can't wait to see it painted. I definitely would consider buying this model, just to paint it. Ahem, back to the synopsis...

In the last turn, I was down to only my Treeman who was locked in combat with his Treeman, and my unit of Glade Guard complete with Highborn, Spellweaver and full command who were at about 25% of its original size bunkered in the Watchtower. Dom charged in a unit of dryads 3 times, and a unit of Wardancers a few times at the tower trying to break the Glade Guard, but the Glade Guard held the objective thanks to the Rhymer's Harp and it's 5+ ward save played by my Spellweaver, and the stubborn Crown of Command worn by my Highborn with Leadership 10.

I was fully painted, Dom was 75% painted, and I held the tower for the scenario victory. Sorry, I am new to the League and I don't know how these ladder mechanics work, so I don't know how this affects our rankings on the ladder if at all.

Dom's dice were really hot, and though I was missing on most of my attacks all game, I made some very key ward saves at the right time, to hold onto the win. My dice were extremely terrible today, but gave me glimmers of hope periodically with clutch ward saves at the perfect times...

I have never won a game of Warhammer with only 2 units left on the table, and the first time I've ever played against Wood Elves. I know most people don't like facing off against their own army race, but I have to say this game was one of my favorite games so far playing Warhammer. It was a knuckle biter right down to the last turn, and I was constantly making the Stubborn 10 leadership rolls multiple times each round do to fear and losing combat constantly at the tower. You could have definitely written a story about this battle over the tower. It was very bloody and I watched my army vaporize over the last 3 rounds.

Dom was an excellent opponent and it was very helpful to me to play against him and see a different style, a unit I've never tried, and see how he used his treeman so expertly rolling his artillery dice a few times and getting 10s and wiping out tough units...

Thanks again Dom!

Darren and I played tonight.

We rolled scenario 1 which was a pitched battle. My dice were totally failing me again, and Darren was rolling like a god for half the game decimating most of my dryads and Treekin by round 3 totally controlling the middle of the table, and me not killing barely anything half way through the game.

The pivotal point in the game I would say was round 5. My Treeman made some epic strangleroot attacks (super lucky rolling 10 on artillery dice in round 4 and 5) which finally killed his stegadon. My lone dryad (yes there was only one model left in the unit due to shooting) charged his slaan unit in the flank with a lone champion as the only buffer in his unit. I was attempting to delay it a round for my hungry Treeman to get within charge/strangleroot range, since my Dryad was init 6 and got to hit first. Somehow the dryad managed to kill the champion. Then the slaan failed the cold blooded leadership test and was overrun by the Dryad. That was one super lucky dryad. My Treeman just frowned the rest of the game after that because he really wanted to taste him some slaan...

Darren was rolling high all night, unfortunately including cold blooded leadership tests. We both really thought he had the game won after turn 4, but one epic turn 5 changed the whole balance of the game.

A few key battles and a few key failed leadership rolls by his steg and his Slaan in Round 5, awarded my eco-friendly Wood Elves a CRUSHING VICTORY over the stinky Lizardmen.
I had a fully painted army, and Darren did not.

In other action tonight, my high elves faced Andre's horde of invading greenskins. We rolled blood and glory. The game swung back and forth a few times, I nearly lost it all in the pivotal battle but my spearman passed their break test and stuck around in turn 5. In my turn 6 I managed to get okkams mindrazor off on the spearmen who then sliced through skarsnik and gobbla ending the game. It was a fun game and Andre is always a great opponent. Victory for me, I was fully painted while Andre was not, it was a ladder challenge and it was the second time we have played this league.

Hodge podge mixture. Bah.

I've been using my straight up casino dice for a while now.

Game was bad.

"I'll put all my Greatswords and detachments in/behind this forest, infantry don't take dangerous terrain from forests, and since I'm stubborn, I don't need to worry about losing Steadfast."
"Rolling for mysterious forest - Venom Thicket. Hmm... Dangerous terrain for everything hey..."
"Oh, I lost all but 1 from that detachment, half that detachment, most of that detachment, a quarter of my Greatswords in the first 2 turns to dangerous terrain. Ok."

Aside from that debacle, It was things like, a flank shot with a cannon on a unit of Silver Helms using my Engineer to re-roll the bounce after putting the shot right on the first guy, rolling a misfire for bounce, re-rolling a misfire, then failing to wound the one guy I hit.

Also Mindrazor. Nathan was simply erasing my few units that were in position to bother him.

Overall, very bad for me.

At the bottom of 3, I had a handful of spearmen left fighting Spearelves with Mindrazor and Dragon Princes in the flank, the clumsy remains of my Greatswords staring down a pretty much untouched Swordmaster unit (I think 20+ with numerous characters), a unit of Inner Circle way out of position and a cannon.

I had removed a unit of 5 Dragon Princes and an eagle.

Definite rematch needed.
