Masters Round 4

Ok guys, here are the details and sign-up thread


Masters Round 4 Saturday, November 19
Dragons Den 9am start time, show up at 8:30 so we can roll dice early
4 round escalation tournament
20$ entry fee

game details........
game 1: 1000pts surprise encounter pg.389
game 2: 1500pts meeting engagement pg.149
game 3: 2500pts battleline pg.144
game 4: 3000pts hired swords pg.396 (500 pts of mercenaries/treacherous troops)


comp restrictions......
900 pts in characters max
unit size max 50models or 500pts....whichever is reached first excluding characters
no duplicate monster slots (anything listed as Mo or Un) unless used as a character mount.

pts breakdown.....
15 battle points possible per round so 60max
5 soft points per round so 20 max (comp and game play....player judged with guidelines)
10 point quiz
20 point painting score

Sign up with name and army+race of mercenaries/treacherous troops

Nathan R. - High Elves with Wood Elf and Bretonnian mercenaries.

If I don't get my high elves painted in time then I'll take Wood Elves with Bretonnian Mercenaries. It sounds like an interesting tournament, are there any guidelines as to what the mercenary force can be?

Here's another question Carson, can the mercenary forces come from multiple army books? Say I wanted some bretonnian knights and dwarf artillery, could I mix and match?

right, missed that in the info. In an escalation tournament you must build upon each previous list. So no, you can't change lists.

1. Can a mage become an archmage or a hero-level character become a lord-level in later games?

2. If a mage can become an archmage, does he have to use the same lore once he is upgraded? For example can my level 2 mage in the 1000 point list use the lore of fire but once he becomes a level 4 archmage in my 2000 or 2500 point list can he then use the lore of metal?

3. Can you add or drop equipment from a unit such as armour on a unit of archers?

4. Can you drop characters or units that you used in the smaller lists?

I don't think any of that can happen.

In an escalation tournament, each round you have to use the previous list plus the additions allowed by the additional points. so....scenario 1 listA, scenario 2 listA plus additional units to make listB, scenario3 ListB plus additional units to make listC etc...

Ok, so just to make sure this is how it works, you can add but you can't subtract, whether that be eqipment or models.

For example: My 1000 point list has a unit of 5 dragon princes with no command. When we go up to 2000 points I can give that unit a musician and champion (but still stay at 5 models) but when we go to 2500 I can't then take away the champion or musician. Correct?

Example #2: I want a unit of 20 spearmen in my 2000 point list. Can I add models to that unit for my 2500 point list?

Last Example: If I take a noble for the 1000 point game, can I give him the Battle Standard and/or other equipment or magic items in later games as long as I don't take anything away from him?

Sorry to keep asking questions, I'm definitely not familiar with this format and I want to make sure I get it right.

No what it means is that unit of 5 dragon princes in the 1000 point game with no command stays as a 5 man dragon prince unit with no command in all games. There is no upgrades to units or characters at all allowed. This is where having heavy core armies are the best at balancing the army. So choose you stuff wisely cause if it sucks at 1000 points it will really suck in a 2500 point battle.

Ok, got it. No adding models, equipment or anything. You can only add full units or characters and once they are in they can not change in any way in later lists.

This is going to make things interesting, I'll see if I can even do this with my high elves.

I think it really favors a MSU approach to building your army, I've sorted out my army lists but I'm 60 points short in my 1000 and 2000 point armies because I don't have any small units.

It also favors armies with cheap characters. I'm stuck with a useless naked level 1 Mage because I couldn't give him any extras and still fit the bsb I wanted into the 250 point hero restriction in the 1000 point list. I also couldn't field an effective lord under 250 points.

It is definitely an interesting way to go about building up a list, I can't say I've ever done it like this before. That said, I'm pretty happy with what I've come up with. My 1000 point list is pretty soft but I'm thinking that most people are going to be in the same boat there.

I know what you mean I was toying around with my list last night and I sure was getting frustrated with what I could or could not take. Does your general have to be the same character throughout? example can I take a runelord as general in 1000pt list and keep that character but transfer general responsibility to a dwarf lord in 2000pt game. Are the mercenary points above and beyond the 3000pts or is that 500 what we are keeping aside from the 3000.

I think the 3000 point game is just your 2500 point list plus 500 points of mercenaries or tretcherous troops.
